Simply determine which circuits to protect during  an outage and choose a generator whose transfer switch's load center offers that number of circuits. The 7kW model offers 8 circuits of protection, the 10kW offers 10 circuits, the 13kW has 12 circuits and the 16kW generator protects 16 circuits. All you do is match a 15 Amp circuit in the transfer switch load center to a 15 Amp in the main  distribution panel. A 20 Amp to a 20 Amp and so on. There is no need to add up wattages, since you’ll never use all appliances on every circuit at the same time. The completely automatic Guardian transfer switch monitors incoming voltage from the utility line - around the clock.   When utility power is interrupted, the automatic transfer switch immediately senses the problem and signals the generator to start.
